A parasitic insect that will feed on rats, mice, cats, dogs, poultry, canaries, etc, but prefers human blood to feed upon. transferred via suitcases, bedding, and mattresses. Can be found in mattresses, box springs, bed frames, headboards, electrical wall sockets, lamps, alarm clocks, clothes racks, wall coverings, carpet edges, curtains, shoes, doorframes, laundry bags, couches, chairs, etc. All but extinct in the USA until a few years ago, it has become a major problem in cities such as New York, Miami, Dallas, and San Francisco. Numerous cases have been documented in the Shreveport/Bossier City area. Females can lay up to 200 eggs after feeding with eggs hatching in 6-17 days. Adults can survive a year without feeding. Active mostly at night. Can be found in any room of a residence or business but normally found nearby where its host blood meal sleeps every night.
