All members of this insect order perform a valuable function in nature. Some are important pollinators of crops, others perform natural pest control by functioning as predators of other insects, and some produce honey. Occasionally a poorly placed nest will create conflict with people. Other times wasp and hornet hunting and foraging behavior will make them pests to people, and to 1% of the human population a sting from these pests is fatal. The following are common pests in Louisiana.
Paper Wasps - A reddish brown aggressive wasp that builds "paper" nests.
Domestic Honeybees - Yellow and black/brown bands on abdomen, hairy.Typically not agressive unless the hive feels threatened.
Africanized "Killer" Bees-Identical to above but very aggressive and dangerous.
Yellowjackets - Striking yellow and black markings, smooth appearance. Will attack agressively and for prolonged periods of time.
Mud daubers - Reddish brown wasp. Not agressive but will sting if threatend.
Carpenter Bees - Black and hairy robust bee. Not agressive unless threatened.
Bumble Bees - Black and yellow hairy robust bee. Severe stinging agressive bee.
