A pretty, manicured lawn and yard can quickly be destroyed by moles, gophers, and armadillos. Whether its moles with their serpentine runs just underneath the grass, pocket gophers and their mounds of dirt, or armadillos with their digging. Ace Services provides trapping services for all of these pests and can show you how to make your yard less attractive to them in the future. The following are the lawn pests that are found in northwest Louisiana;
1) Eastern Mole - Gray, brown or tan short fur, 6 to 8 inches long, with pointy noise, a short stubby tail, extremely small eyes and ears, no tail, and large fleshy outward pointing foreclaws. Eats grubs, worms, and subsoil insects. Mainly active March and April and August and September, when grub worms are high in the soil. Makes long runs in lawns just underneath grass level.
2) Plains Pocket Gopher - Pale brown, black or gray, long hairless tail, small eyes, with extremely large front claws. Makes huge mounds of dirt, mounds are sometimes kidney shaped. Feeds on roots of small shrubs, bushes, and dandelions. Active year round.
3) Nine Banded Armadillo - Pink to tan colored animal with 9 armored, bony plates. Approximately 18 to 24 inches long with tail. Extremely sharp front claws. Nocturnal animal, but sometimes seen during daytime in cooler temperatures. Digs small holes in lawns and flower beds when feeding on grubs. Mainly active in March and April and August and September, but can be active year round if warm enough for grub activity.
