Squirrels are cute to look at running in the yard and through the trees, but are not so cute chewing on your house and running in your attic. They really get to be a nuisance when they chew on wires in your attic and keep you up at 5 in the morning. Especially active in the morning and the evening. Most feed on "mast" such as, nuts, acorns, walnuts, beechnuts, hickory nuts, maple buds, bark, apples, tulip tree blossoms, fungi, and the occasional insect. Normally when they find nuts they cache them at another spot, burying them in shallow soil for retrieval when food is scarse during winter months. Activity spikes in the fall, when squirrels are cacheing food for winter, during mid winter when mating chases happen, in spring when the early litters are born, and late summer when the second litters are born. Nests are made of twigs and leaves resembling a ball in trees, or in knotholes of trees. Frequently though, a squirrel will chew a hole through a fascia board on a home and nest in someones attic. The barking, running, and chirping of squirrels in an attic can be very loud. The following are the common squirrel species found in Louisiana;
1) Eastern Gray Squirrel - Gray above with paler buff underneath approximately 17 to 19" long and 14 to 25 oz bushy tail.
2) Eastern Fox Squirrel - Similiar to Eastern Gray but slightly larger and has orange or yellow tipped tail hairs.
3) Southern Flying Squirrel - Very small squirrel. Grayish brown above, white below, loose fold of skin between foreleg and hindleg, falttened tail, with large black eyes. Nocturnal, Does not actually fly, but can glide quite well for 80 meters.
